Welcome to the Department
With accounting first taught at the University of Melbourne in 1925, the Department of Accounting and Business Information Systems has a well established reputation as a premier educator in the field of accounting. As one of the largest and oldest accounting departments in Australia we attract the highest calibre of academic staff and students.
Many of the Department's academic staff have experience in industry and the profession and provide advice as consultants and expert witnesses. They have the experience to blend theoretical and practical knowledge in their teaching.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs
At the undergraduate level, the Department offers students a rigorous course of study in the areas of Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Auditing and Assurance Services as well as Information Systems within a business context. The course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to practise as professional accountants, to satisfy the subject requirements of professional accounting accreditation and/or to pursue advanced studies in the discipline. The Department also supports a substantial postgraduate program, teaching across all core areas of Accounting and Business Information Systems.
Career outcomes and options
The accountant of today is a strategic advisor and business partner who must have a sound understanding of business as well as the skills needed to produce and analyse complex financial information. All the courses offered have been developed with these imperatives in mind and will provide students with an opportunity to further develop professional skills and competencies.
Links with industry and the professions
Part of the success of the Department has been its ability to adapt its programs to meet the changing demands of industry and the profession. With the advent of information technology, the Department has revised its programs to deliver accounting in an information systems setting. An increasing number of staff have backgrounds both in accounting and business information systems and are ideally placed to help students understand the fully integrated nature of accounting and information technology in today's workplace.
The Department of Accounting and Business Information Systems offers a range of programs for everyone. Whether you are an aspiring undergraduate student wishing to become a professional accountant, an accountant with years of experience or a recent graduate with no formal accounting training we have the program that may be of interest to you. Graduates with accounting specialisations are highly sought after and are in demand by accounting firms, management consulting firms, industry, banking and financial services and government organisations.
