Accounting in today's business world is extremely sophisticated. An accountant is a strategic adviser and business partner who must have a good understanding of business issues and processes as well as te skills necessary for sound decision making.
Accounting studies will equip you to understand the financial structure of an organisation and produce and analyse financial information.
An Accounting Major - What do you study?
Those who wish to complete an accounting major (leading to recognition by Australian accounting profesisonal bodies) need to complete:
- First year subjects in accounting, introductory economics, business process analysis and quantitative methods;
- Intermediate and third year subjects in financial accounting, cost management, enterprise performance management, auditing, finance and business law.
Around 18 subjects are prescribed in the accounting major. The remaining six subjects required to complete the degree may be chosen from within the Faculty or from other faculties, according to your interests and career objectives.

If your aim is not specifically to meet professoinal recognition requirements but you wish to gain a basic grounding in Accounting, you should take the following subjects:
- 306-107 Accounting Reports and Analysis
- 306-108 Accounting Transactions and Analysis
To gain a firm grounding in Accounting you should take the following subjects in addition to those listed above:
- 306-106 Business Process Analysis
- 306-201 Cost Management
- 306-202 Intermediate Financial Accounting
- 306-304 Auditing and Assurance Services
