Centre for Accounting & Industry Partnerships 2009 FORUM
Fair Value: Another opportunity for reform lost?
Date: Tuesday , October 13, 2009
Time: 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.- Conference session followed by a cocktail reception
Place: Level 12 Boardroom, Faculty of Economics & Commerce,
The Spot, 198 Berkeley Street, Carlton.
The 2009 FORUM will explore issues related to the fair value accounting standard - one of the most controversial accounting standards ever issued. The world spotlight is firmly on fair value accounting and there is vigorous ongoing debate. Concerns raised by the GFC, and developments in current projects of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), suggest that the drive to fair value accounting may be losing momentum. But do we really know why we should accept or reject it as a universal measurement attribute?
The 2009 FORUM gives you the opportunity to gain insights direct from these standard setters, allows ample time to discuss the matters raised and hear from them about what these changes really are and what they mean to you. This will be an interactive forum where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide comment relevant to your organisation and your role.
Keynote Speakers:
Kevin Stevenson is the Chairman and CEO, Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB) and will be commenting on the concerns raised in the GFC debates and what may be seen as vacillation in current IASB deliberations on measurement issues.
Mary Barth from Stanford Graduate School of Business and Board Member, of the International Accounting Standards Board, (IASB) 2001-2009 will be presenting a concise review on the research literature and comment on its relevance for those worried about whether fair value accounting is worthwhile pursuing. Mary will also reflect on how the fair value accounting debate evolved over her time on the IASB.
Note: this event is ‘by invitation only’

Since 1992, the seminar series has been a key component of the Department’s considerable contribution to the improvement and advancement of practice and education in these areas.
Brown Bag Presentations
The Department's Brown Bag Presentations are less formal seminars where working papers and research ideas in the preliminary stages of development are presented and discussed.
